Experimental Short Films was held by the Doral Con

Experimental Short Films was held by the Doral Contemporary Art Museum and the Miami Short Film Festival on August 15, 2024, at 7 PM at CityPlace Doral, FL.

Many of today’s problems arise from misunderstandings of how people live, love, and work across different cultures. A powerful way to address these misconceptions is by immersing the audience in cinematic experiences to showcase the complexities of life in those contexts. Among the short films were:

“At Words’ End” by Julius Stakisaitis (Lithuania), “Pass:on” by Pablo Daniel Magee (UK), “Retrospection of a Home (once upon a time...)” by Sebastian Marcano-Perez (USA), and “Moving Barcelona” by Jevan Chowdhury (UK).

Debates concerning significant issues affecting not just filmmakers but humanity at large were sparked after the show. Residents of Doral interacted with visiting filmmakers during the festival, cultivating a feeling of community.

Today, the Doral Contemporary Art Museum joined Diego Waisman at the @umartgalleries for an exclusive artist tour of “For I Shall Already Have Forgotten You.”
During this special event, @dwaisman walked attendees through the exhibition of works from his forthcoming monograph “Sunset Colonies”: A 7-year project that documents the disappearance and gentrification of South Florida’s Mobile Home Communities, published by @floridapress
“Now Leasing” 2021 from “Sunset Colonies”.

Furthermore, “Sunset Colonies” is a photobook documenting the gentrification and disappearance of South Florida’s mobile home communities. Essays by scholars Amy Galpin, Louis Herns Marcelin, and Alpesh Kantilal Patel give context to the current situation of these trailer parks, which at first promised their occupants stability, affordable housing, and for many, a comfortable retirement. But development initiatives, surging rent prices, and environmental hazards have disrupted this dream. An homage to a way of life that is quickly slipping away, Sunset Colonies raises urgent questions about the invisibility of mobile communities, their histories, and their potential futures.

Our AUDIOVISUAL Summer Camp with the Doral Contemporary Art Museum and Miami Institute of Photography has officially wrapped up! Our campers have truly rocked this summer, embracing new techniques, creating unique projects, and editing videos at City Place Doral. Here is a compilation of what our campers have created in camp!

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone, especially our campers, for turning the past two weeks into a hub of discovery and new friendships.

A special round of applause goes to our amazing instructor from the Miami Institute of Photography for guiding our campers to new heights.

Miami Short Film Festival and Doral Contemporary Art Museum present Experimental Short Films tomorrow, August 15, 2024, at 7 PM at City Place Doral, FL.

Films include:

The film festival documents a Venezuelan family’s memories, a group finding connection through visuals,
an array of artists collaborating, an identity crisis within
Spain, and an exploration of historical tensions and
societal stagnation.
