Overview

CHILDREN OF THE DIASPORA

Since the early 20th century, Miami has held a plethora of shrouded memories belonging to immigrants of the Latin diaspora, stories that are inherited and passed down from generation to generation. Nowadays, the current descendants of these immigrants possess a consolidation of cultural, yet personal images, music, and writings that shouldn’t be forgotten. These same children embrace and conjoin their ancestors’ customs and traditions with a flare of modern American culture, bringing forth an ancestral rhythm within each new footstep.

This exhibition brings multimedia artwork made by South Florida’s very own immigrant youth. Students and alumni of Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts, Doral Academy, Christopher Columbus High School, New World School of the Arts and more have produced 41 thought-provoking, poetic art pieces in which their cultural roots speak loud and clear.“Nostalgia”, “Desencuentro/Re-encuentro”, and “Orgullo”, are the three main themes that come to mind when confronting these art pieces. Each immigrant child deals with emotions, experiences, and traditions embraced by such concepts, and these ideas are omnipresent within this exhibition.Isabela de la Grana, Ana Rubin, Paolo Cesti, Camila Celaya, Aquiles Barreto, Greter Camacho, Sophia Bolivar, Ana Karen Garro, Ismael Perez Ramirez, and the students of the CCNN broadcast journalism collective are the artists exhibited. All of them worked with topics that are deeply rooted within their young souls, embracing the ancestry that trails behind them. Flourishing adults with a heritage that is bound to their flesh, the Children of the Diaspora are sharing their unique experiences, each growing as promising artists.
